Off-Line UPSOff-Line UPS
Off-line UPS are unsophisticated and inexpensive. They switch to inverter only when the mains dies, (resulting in a very short break of power that will not affect most equipment). They provide no power conditioning, but are efficient in use and low in cost.
Freestanding Line Interactive UPSFreestanding Line Interactive UPS
Line interactive UPS are very similar in design to off-line UPS except that they offer a limited amount of power conditioning. They will boost low voltages and reduce (buck) high voltages, so that during minor power fluctuation they do not have to call upon the battery for stored power.
Rackmounted Line Interactive UPSRackmounted Line Interactive UPS
Just the same as the freestanding versions, but designed for mounting in 19" racks.
Freestanding On-Line UPSFreestanding On-Line UPS
On-line UPS are so-called because the inverter (the part which produces the AC output) is always on-line. As a result, they are much more reliable since, should the inverter fail, they simply drop back to mains power and sound an alarm. The chances of it failing during a power failure are very low indeed (MTBF times mains availability rate) whereas an off-line or line interactive UPS inverter can only ever fail during mains failure. In addition, their double conversion design ensures excellent output power quality even when the incoming mains is poor or faulty. At these smaller sizes, they're usually a little more expensive.

Just the same as the freestanding versions, but designed for mounting in 19" racks! These are the equipment of choice for more important (i.e. Server) applications.
